I did it. All by myself!
« on: June 22, 2013, 12:52:13 PM »
I feel like a giant. After listening to the door-to-door Vivint guy tell me how I was putting my family in danger by having a phone-line system, how I can't put a cost of peace of mind, how much money he was going to save me by using them, etc., I decided to do it by myself; using the same system components he was pushing on me.

I installed a 2GIG panel to replace an older Honeywell Link panel. That took about 20 minutes.

I connected all of our existing sensors. That takes about 30 minutes.

I installed a new flood sensor; about 10 minutes.

I installed a new Thermostat; about 20 minutes.

Total time, about 120 minutes and I feel good.

And, instead of paying Vivint $54/month (home/energy package) for 36 months ($1944 for the 36mo term), I am signed up with SuretyCAM (thanks, Amanda) for only $27.95 for the same monitoring packages (saves my family $937.80 over 36 months). Sure, I have a few hundred dollars in equipment costs and that reduces my savings, but I have the freedom to do what I want, when I want, add what I want and that is worth a lot to me.

If you are thinking of doing it yourself, do it. Easy and fun!

What did I learn. I can install a security system. What should the Vivint guy learn? If you come to my door uninvited, I will not buy from you but pick your brain in exchange for my time you wasted.

Now I just wait for the connection from SuretyCAM and I am 100%.

That is great to hear old school. I used to manage a fire alarm/security company but now I encourage people like yourself to attempt the installations themselves. You can save a TON of money by at least purchasing the equipment yourself and having it installed. Great to hear you made out okay.

Nice work!  Companies have put lots of money into making it a simple process.  If anyone ever finds themselves struggling with something they are probably over thinking it.  One way or another they are making it harder than they intended too.

DIY alarms are nice because no extra screwing etc.
