A smoke detector detects smoke.

A carbon monoxide detector .. detects carbon monoxide.

In the instance of a fire there is not necessarily the presence of carbon monoxide. And vice versa.

Both types of detectors are recommended.

Smoke detectors only detect smoke but not CO.CO is a harmfull gas and it is colorless  and Odorless gas which cannot be detected By humans and the presence of it in a room can kill a person in 20 min.
