Yes there are some cases where fire erupted even in presence of smoke detectors,and causes death of the people.You should take some
safety Steps
if you dont want such a thing happen to you like do regular checks every month weather all the devices are working properly or not.

If system smoke detectors are maintained, serviced, kept clean, and installed and located properly, the chance of them malfunctioning is miniscule.

We have had issues with the Honeywell 5800 smoke detectors after changing batteries. They had a bad batch that would alert low batteries even when a new battery was put in.
